ADDITIONAL SNOWMOBILE INFORMATION:
The Muskegon County Road Commission has provided Dalton Township with a reference sheet for the winter of 2009/2010 for the operation of snowmobiles within county road rights-of-ways.  This reference sheet contains excerpts from Part 821 of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, Act 451 of 1994.  By clicking on the following link you will be redirected to another page of our website where we have placed this reference sheet for your viewing:  Muskegon County Road Commission Winter 2009/2010 Reference Sheet

ICE SAFETY*
  • Ice covered by snow always should be presumed unsafe. It's thinner and weaker.
  • Slush covered ice is half as strong as clear ice and indicates it is no longer freezing on the bottom.
  • Ice weakens with age; it turns dark and gets honeycombed.
  • Test the ice thickness and remember it may be a different thickness nearby.
  • Check the weather & ice conditions before a trip to the ice.
  • Have a plan: tell family/friends where you're going and when you expect to be back. Stick to the plan.
  • Use the buddy system, bring someone with you.
  • Dress in bright colors. Wear a personal floatation device.
  • Carry a whistle or noise making device to alert people that you are in distress.
  • Carry two screwdrivers or a set of ice awls. If you fall through the ice you can use them to get out.
 Alternative Heat - Safety Tips**
  • Install carbon monoxide detectors in several areas of the house
  • Never use the oven, range or stove to heat your home.
  • Never burn trash, paper or green wood in your fireplace. These items cause heavy creosote buildup, which could eventually start a fire in your chimney.
  • Only buy heaters evaluated by a nationally recognized laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
  • Purchase electric heaters with a thermostat control mechanism that will switch off should the heater tip over.
  • Never use electric heaters to dry clothes or other objects. Keep space heaters at least three feet away from any combustibles.
  • Plug your electric heater directly into the wall - do not use an extension cord or a power strip.
  • Always unplug your electric heater when it is not in use.
