What happens if I do not pay my property taxes on time?

Please note that the tax bill does not have to be paid in one lump sum. If it is easier, you may make payments. You can begin making payments online/ or in person as soon as bills are issued, (July 1st & December 1St)- you do not need your bill in hand to make payments. Please call the township treasures office if you have any questions.

The tax bill must be paid in full by the due date to avoid interest and penalties outlined below. However, any payments made before the due date will reduce the balance due and therefore reduce the interest and/or penalties.

Summer Tax Bills: As per the state law, if summer taxes are not paid by the due date (September 14th), interest will be charged in the amount of 1% per month (or fraction of the month) on the unpaid balance.

Winter Tax Bills:   As per the state law, if winter taxes are not paid by the due date (February 14th), interest will be charged in the amount of 1% per month (or fraction of the month) on the unpaid balance.

Penalty: As per the state law, any taxes winter that remain unpaid as of February 15th will have a 3% penalty added to the balance due.

Any taxes that remain unpaid on March1st, each year, are turned over to the Muskegon County Treasurer for collection. Additional penalties/interest are added and will continue to accrue as per the State law.

There is a drop box located by the main doors at the township hall, for payments if unable to make payments during business hours (Monday-Thursday 8am-5:30pm), Post marks are not accepted at Dalton Township.
